What is TAG?

The Thornton Action Group was formed in December 2001 in response to the concerns of Thornton residents to the scale of housing developments and related issues such as traffic and drainage which are affecting our community.

The purpose of the Action Group is to:

  1. Keep the residents of Thornton informed about proposals affecting their environment.
  2. Seek the views of residents concerning these proposals.
  3. Act as a channel of communication between the residents and the appropriate bodies involved in the proposals.

We are a group of local people and act in the interests of all Thornton residents. We have a working committee of 20 and we extend an invitation to all residents to come and join our work. We hold a wide variety of political views BUT we are united in wanting a better deal for Thornton from both Wyre Borough and Lancashire County Councils. We feel it is important to work with our local councillors and MPs.

Our concerns include: the increased pressure on local roads, access to and from the area. The strain on schools, medical services and drainage systems. Also to point out the real risk of flooding. Increased housing developments are threatening our open spaces, trees, playing fields and playgrounds.

In one year we have made T.A.G. known to the Council, both officials and elected members and we believe that we are listened to and CAN make a difference. In September 2002 at a public enquiry we challenged the Councils decision to allow 500 houses to be built on Poolfoot Farm. The inspector turned the application down, accepting much of our evidence as the basis for his report.

We have registered our concerns at what is proposed for Thornton 2006 - 2016 in the Lancashire Structure Plan and Wyre Borough's Local Plan. Yet more houses are to be built, again concentrated on Thornton.

Meetings

The next meeting will be on Tuesday, 23rd February 2010 at 7.15pm, at Wignall Church Hall, on Victoria Road East, Thornton. If you would like to attend you will be made most welcome.
