Hargreaves Street Playing Field. View looking N.E. from Occupation Road end
This is an area of informal open space in North Thornton. It is 1.15 acres in area, which provides a buffer between the residential area to the west along Trunnah Road and Redmarsh Industrial Estate to the east. Access is from Brown Street via Trunnah Road. Together with the strip of land along Heys Street, it is the ONLY area for children to play in an area of tightly packed housing with small or no gardens.
Over the years various applications for housing development on the site have been refused, although application for some light industrial use was approved. In 1997 Wyre Housing Association applied to build 15 two storey houses, which would occupy the greater part of the site. This is despite the Council's assurances to the local residents given in 1979 that the area should remain as open space and a buffer zone.
The value of this open space to the local community cannot be over emphasized. There is no alternative and conveniently located equivalent space. Watch this (open) space.
